Brownlee-Morrow and John Crane Mechanical Seals Reduce Chronic Downtime for a Coal-Fired Power Plant

A local coal-fired power plant had reliability issues with a mechanical seal in a large slurry pump in a gypsum slurry service and reached out to Brownlee-Morrow Company for assistance. The internally mounted seal failed repeatedly at 4 week intervals and required removal of casing and impeller to replace. It was an all day job for the whole maintenance crew!

Collaborating with the customer and John Crane, we studied the application and determined that the John Crane Model 3740 split cartridge seal was the best solution. Installation of this externally mounted seal required a mounting adapter and a throat bushing to throttle a clean water flush. With the split design, future replacement will require no pump dismantling and minimal downtime.

The Model 3740 seal was installed in June 2017 and has successfully sealed this difficult application ever since. We welcome the opportunity to assist with your most difficult sealing applications. Contact us today to learn more, click here to see more information on the 3740.
